PROGRESS OF LIBERTY LOAN

THOUGH still in the comparatively early stages of the loan campaign, it is interesting to watch the progress of the local appeal, for there can be no doubt but that for widespread publicity the present effort knows no peer. Up to the week-end the Whakatane postal district had raised £4450, from fifteen applications. The sales of War Savings Bonds drew a further £133, and the week's National Savings deposits a further £102, making a total of £4685. The campaign now enters its second week and the broad Dominion figures indicate that over £7,000,000 is now in hand, but it must not be forgotten that over half that figure was made up of advance subscriptions which had been receivable since February. It should be recognised that the loan represents the finest investment it is possible to make and further, that unless it can be met. the money will be compulsorily taken by increased taxation.
