FORTHCOMING GENERAL ELECTION
THE Prime Minister's announcement that the much-debated general election will take place in September, gives but a bare three months for parties generally to commence working up their respective campaigns. Just what the general reaction of the country will be, to an election in the midst of the greatest of all wars is hard to say, but it must be generally admitted that the average 'person desires a change, or at least a country-wide test to indicate the true strength of opinion behind the present Government. It has been hinted that the election will be the most bitter in our history. It would be regrettable if its bitterness exceeded the tener of the 1935 elections when Labour first gained office. September's election undoubtedly will produce a battle ground of parties, old and new, and their variety will not have been exceeded at any previous National Poll. So far the country is comparatively quiet but it can be taken as read that political party executives are now veritable bee hives of activity. Quite apart from existing parties now in office we can expect candidates from the 'Real Democracy Movement,' 'Social Justice Movement,' 'Communist -Organisation,' 'Non-Party Movement, John A. Lee's Party,' 'Country Party,' 'Soldiers Party,' and from others who are less known.
