VALUATIONS OPPOSED

A sitting of the Assessment Court under the provisions of the Urban Farm Lands Rating Act, took place in Wliakatane last week, Mr E. L. Walton, S.M. presiding. Associated with him on the bench were Messrs A. C. Sutherland (Borough Council) and W. Roberts (Government). I liree objections were heard from Bernard McMahon, Mrs Emily E. Hunt and Miss M. Crockett. The .valuation in each ease was £15 per acre. The substance of the objections was that the land was low-lying and subject to flood and also that the farms enjpyeel but a meagre amount of the ordinary facilities supplied by the Borough. Mr L. Buddie (Borough Council) pointed out that the properties were valued at a figure which was £5' and £10 Jess than county valuations of land on the other side of the river which was almost, identical. These lands carried rates to the extent of £1 4s. 4d per acre whereas the objectors were only charged £1 'is 5d per acre. The court after a short adjourn* rnent resumed sitting and decided to sustain the valuations appearing in the roll.
