COMBINED GYMKHANA

KING'S BIRTHDAY EVENT

R.S.A. AND WINTER SHOW

KEEN HORSE CONTESTS

Dull threatening we'ather was definitely responsible for the limited attendance at the King's Birthday Gymkhana and Sports Meeting held in aid 1 of the combined R.S.A. and Winter Show organisations which took place in the Whakatane Domain yesterday. The crowd was not of the usual proportions which has lately been in the habit of attending such gatherings, but the gate nevertheless totalled £78 and as a result both of the promoting bodies should benefit substantially.

As could be expected the horse events were the main attraction and once again provided the splendid standard displays which are now becoming a feature of the Whakatane district. The military aspect was emphasised by the large number of army and mounted events, the most outstanding being the novelty mounted races and the machine gun and drilling displays by thR infantry.

Great excitement, attended the tifg-of-war contest in which the: stalwarts from the newly constituted Matata Maori camp vied with each other and as the announcer remarked it was fortunate the rope did not part in the centre.

The sports executive are to be complimented on the success of the day which was perhaps the latest-in-the.season a sports meeting ha? ever been held in these parts.

The. final event of the day was perhaps the sight provided by our local M.P. spiritedly auctioning a pig and a sheep. Our reporter did not stay long enough to see the results.
