WHALE ISLAND
POSSIBLE NEW INDUSTRY
MANUFACTURE OF SALT
In a letter to Mr W. Sullivan M.P. the Minister of Scientific and In-
dustrial Research, referred to investigations being made by the Department Officers at Whale' Island.
Preliminary work at Whale Island has been carried out lie said, as part, of wider investigations to explore the possibilities of utilising thermal heat for industrial purposes, for, example, the manufacture of salt by the evaporation of seawater. The manufacture of salt' in this, way would be most economically carried, out if. the source of natural heat were as close as possible to the. supply of seawater. Whale Island was therefore first selected for exploratory work since considerable thermal activity exists there. The chemical engineering problems involved in such an undertaking have not yet been sufficiently fully investigated and may take, some considerable time, it is considered that boring at Whale Island, which would be a fairly costly undertaking, should not be proceeded with until such data is available.
