AERODROME PROPOSAL

A VARIETY OF SITES .0-- '• • — 4LCOUNTY AND BOROUGH SUGGESTIONS

Writing the County Council with regard tp the proposal to establish a district aerodrome* - • „ the Whakatane Borough Couikcil stated that in' the: earlier i»-* vestigatiions a number of sites were selected and considered after the district had been. thor. oughly combed for suitable areas. The Borough Council considered that an invitation should be extended to a Departmental i expert to visit Whakatane and advise which he considers the best site, from amongst these and the County plantation site. The County Clerk reported the sites held in mind by the Borough were Eivers property, the site opposite the golf course, Ryde's property (Poroporo) and Shawns (Paroa). • Cr McCracken said, he ttfought a site nearer Te Teko would be suitable say ett the Galatea junction. Cr Hunter suggested that a morecareful inspection should be madQ of Campbell and Johnson's property near Otakiri where there was any amount of dead level land. The chairman (Mr J. L. Burnett) said that it would be a matter entirely for the aviation officer who * was sent down to inspect to make ' the selection. He himself thought that it was obvious that they would have to go beyond the populated areas. The meeting decided to instruct its Works' Committee to confer with the. Borough Council Aerodrome Committee on sites and that the • County's proposals be submitted, inorder of merit. The chairman remarked in conclusion that the proposed site should be as near central as possible—not merely for the town but for the district as a whole.
