HARBOUR REVIEW

CHAIRMAN'S ANNUAL REPORT ***

SOUND FINANCIAL POSITION

ifIn his annual report to the Whakatane Harbour Board last Friday Mr' W. R. Boon gave an interesting resume of the year's activities.

Though no major works had been undertaken he . said, the BoardjAgd carried, on very satisfactorily wpr a difficult period. The berthage at the town wharf had caused trouble in the past but was now well on the way towards being remedied. He hoped by next meeting to be able to- report that the deepening had been carried out.

The extension of the seawall at the Heads was another undertaking and though it. was probable that, stilt further work would have to be done in this connection until the rock formation of the cliff was 'encountered it was now fairly satisfactory. Mr Boon touched on the contest which the Board had had with the local Transport Board when it was feared that the port would sufferseverely as a result of all goods going by rail. The-outcome had fortunately been in favour of keeping the port open and retaining the shipping services.

He spoke also of the town planning scheme, by Messrs Harrison and Grierson which the : Board had adop- ' ted recently, as a very valuable asset for the -town.

Concluding, he thanked, the secretary, board members and the staff for their interest and co-operation"! during the year. Mr Boon -was unanimously reelected chairman at the same orarlum as in the past £75. H
