WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
MATATA MEETING
The Matata Women's Institute held its April meeting in the 1 Par-! ish Hall. Mrs H. Withy presided over a good attendance of members, and being Grandmothers' Day, the grand mothers acted as hostesses and provided the entertainment.
The meeting opened with the singing of Ode to Friendship, and tile Aspirations were read by Mrs Schick. The Jjusiness included the arranging of a Garden Party to be hflsd at the.' Hall on May 14 to raise funds for the soldiers' parcels. Mrs Ansel 1 was nominated as legate to attend the Dominion Conference to be held at Gisborne. Miss Burt, delegate to the annual Federation meeting held at Opotiki, gave an interesting account of the meeting. • The programme for the coining year was discussed. An invitation to attend the Otakiri Institute's birthday was received. At the conclusion of the business an enjoyable aftcsnoon tea was served. A visitor from Wellington gave; ,a humorous recitation which was thoroughly enjoyed. The singing of the National Anthem brought a very liappj r afternoon to a close. The result of the competition was as follows: .Best. Flower, Miss Burt 1 and 2; Mils Appleby 3.
MEETING AT OTAKIRI
The Otakiri Women's Institute held its 13th annual birthday party on Wednesday, May o, with a very good, attendance of members and friends. Mrs Dunning, vice-president, was in tlic chair, and after the routine business, called on Mrs Whiteside, who is leaving the district, to accept a small token of appreciation from her friends of the Instil tute. The meeting was then addressed by Nurse Jolly, of the School Dental Clinic, after which Mrs Dunning welcomed the visitors from jNlatata, Te? Teko and Whakatane, and the social entertainment commenced. A very enjoyable play reading was given by Mesdames Peck, Cristall, Whiteside and Miss TunnielilTe, a film star competition was won b'y Miss M. Aston, and an entertaining progressive game was won bv Miss Matthews. During afternoon tea the birthday cake, made by Mrs Missen, anil decorated by Mrs Armstrong, was— cut by Mrs H.
