AVAILABILITY OF METAL

The Deputy Mayor,, Cr S. S. Shapley, was at considerable pains to explain at last Monday's meeting that when he declared that suitable metal for the making of rubbish tins was unprocurable, in the face of an offer from Messrs Cutlers Hardware to supply 500 containers, he was referring to galvanised iron and no't 'black iron' as mentioned in the firm's letter
"I jus-t -want to say that I feel I should substantiate my words," lie said. "[ think I handle as much metal of this type as*anyone else in the Bay of Plenty and in. otfder to back up my statement I have written to the four largest manufacturing firms in Auckland." Cr Shapley produced the letters which stated that the metal (22in guage) was not available, in galvanised hut could be supplied in black iron, heavily aluminiumed. This; sort of thing lie said, was not suitable. He could have .manufactured them as such himself, but it would not be a suitable article for rubbish tins.
