LINOLEUMS FOR HOSPITAL

BOARD DELIBERATES OFFER

Speculation as to whether it should take advantage of an offer of the Director General of Health and place an order for 700 square yards of linoleum on indent in anticipation of the erection of £he proposed new buildings, occupied' the Whakatane Hospital Board for some time yesterday. The chairman said, that it had be-cn estimated that 700 square yards would be nccesary for the new buildings and that. the. Matron had suggested plain brown. Mr McGougan queried the wisdom of placing .sue 1 * on order now when it was uncertain as* to whether the building scheme would be proceeded with. Mrs Haul tain thought that it should be purchased as it. could easily be disposed of if it were not required. The opportunity might not come again and oven if it did the cost. Avould. inevitably be greater. The chairman observed that there was actually no hurry as even if the buildings, were proceeded with the linos would not be required for at least nine months. The secretary (Mr T. A. Bridger) estimated the cost to be 255 ; per yard. Mr McCready said he could not understand any hesitancy in spending such a comparatively small sum, when it was obvious from its former decisions that the Board didn't cars what expense it involved the. ratepayers in. If the sky was the limit and the ratepayers only a joke —why halt now, he said. Mr McGougan mentioned that the Countj r Council was practically taking a poll of the ratepayers on the question and he would be averse to buying the. linoleum. "If this commodity was absolutely essential-to the operations of the hospital," said the chairman, "I would favour its purchase but we must all realise that even if the loan does go ahead the hospital vvon't ccasc. to function for lack of linoleum." Mrs Haul tain moved that the order be placed in full. .Mr Suckling said he would agree to second if the amount were halved, but finding the mover adamant seconded pro forma,

The motion on being put. to the mectibg Avas Idst on a show of hands.
