GOLDEN WEDDING

MR AND MRS H. J. RYDE

GATHERING AT POROPORO

A large and representative gathering assembled at their residence Poroporo, Bay of Plenty, last Sunday to do honour to Mr and Mrs H. J. Rydc on the occasion of their : Golden Wedding. Thcj r Ave re married at Gibbies Valley, Canterbury, •on the 9th May, 1893. Alter a period of teaching in the Canterbury and Westland districts,, they came to the North Island 30 years ago. -and took up a position as teachers iit Poroporo, Avhere prior to their retirement they taught for over 20 : years. While there they have taken an • active part in the activities, of tlx* district and have endeared themselves to all they have met. During the afternoon Mrs Sisam on behalf of those present asked Mr -•and Mrs Rydc to accept two upholstered fireside chairs as a token •of appreciation and esteem of all present. Mrs Ryde was also presented Avith tAvo beautiful boucjucts from the guests, and a lovely box of flowers from the W'hakatane Women's Institute. Many letters and telegrams from all parts of both Island's Avere. receiA*ed. Prior to afternoon tea Mrs N.' Carter rendered tAvo appropriate solos Aery feeling^. The toast of \hc afternoon Avas given by Mr L. Buddie. Avho dwele the help the. recipients had been t'o the district . community as a whole. Mr Rydc responded in his usual iiappy- manner. Present on the occasion Averc all the members of the Ryde family, viz:—Mrs F. Peebles, of Tancatua; Mr F. G. Mi. SutclifTc, Whakatane'; Mrs C. C. Applebj', of Palm erst on Otago, and, Corporal H. F. E. Ryde, I?.N.Z.A.ib ~ Hamilton and nine grandchildren and three great grand- - children. - The afternoon closed Avith the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" in the -usual manner.
