AN EXPLANATION
SPEEDING SERVICE CARS
DUE TO LIMITED TIMETABLES
Referring to the County Council's letter 'concerning a traffic offencc committed by one of the Department's drivers, the Superintendent, N.Z. Railways Department, has written in extenuation of the position and explaining the' difficulties of the service under limited timetables.
The letter stated: "It is found that the excessive speed of the vehicle checked by the Council on such date Avas the result of the driver concerned misunderstanding the intent of the tight timings on his timetable. When the timetable, was framed t,he published times at several points en route were advanced a matter of two miiintes which ijn the aggregate, meant a somewhat tight run if such timings were adhered to. The advancing of the timings was done to prevent undue delays en route through the late ar-> rival of passengers at pick-up points, although it Avas not intended that drivers should adhere to these times, but rather that they should gauge their runs according to the established running times. alloAved, between each stage, such established running times being computed in conformitj r Avith regulation speeds having regard to the condition o£ the particular portions of the roads being travelled over. It is appreciate ed that this is an unusual method of framing a timetable, i.e. to lia\e one set of times for publication and rfnother set to govern the actual running of vehicles, and in vie.w of the misunderstanding that has occurred, the officer responsible' for operations on the route in question has been requested to review the timetables and adjust them along the more usual and desirable line. When the adjustment, is made, there should not be cause for any further complaint regarding breaches of the regulation speeds." The Council in view of all the circumstances decided to take no action.
