A LOSS TO THE TURF The Beau Pere —F1 ying Mist gelding, Beau Ciel, bolted at Washdyke on the morning of the Timaru races and broke a leg when being pulled up. THE PAEROA STEEPLECHASER ' The Paeroa jumper, Conflagration, is being prepared for big jumping events. A proficient lepper and good stayer, he promises to be a payable proposition again during the season. GREAT EASTER AND,AUTUMN The biggest, weight carrying record for the Canterbury Great Easter is that of Machine Gun, 10.4. in 1905. In the Great Autumn Handicap Sasanoff in 1920 carried the highest winning Avcight 9.13. A GIFT HORSE Visibility, a big six old Kincardine gelding, has been presented by the oAvncr of Kindergarten to the Hons. P. C. Webb and G. R. A KEEN CONTEST The jockey's championship for this season is being closely contested. At the. beginning of the month W. J. Brougliton Avas in the lead with 34 wins, tAvo ahead of W. J. Ellis. At the Timaru meeting the latter scored on Grilse and Sascha, and is. noAV kwel with Brougliton. SHOWING PACE Miss E. L. Morrison's chestnut colt Transfix, by Broiefort—Lady Ca\ 7 endish, is being highly spoken of by those who have seen: him: working on the Ellerslie tracks. Although somewhat ort the small side side he has galloping capability. INCREASED PRIZE MONEY The Wellington Racing Club has increased the stakes for its; Winter meeting by £3400. The 1 Wellington Steeplechase Avill be worth £1500 and Whyte Handicap £1000. For the second day the Winter Hurdles, Steeplechase and Parliamentary Handicap haA'e each been allotted £1000. WINNING SIRES With the flat racing season soon to close for the running of crosscountry events the list of winning sires at April 1, Avas headed by Foxbridge Avith £15,885, folloAved by Bulandsliar £9507, Hunting Song £8977, Mr Standfast £8271 and Kincardine £6724. It would- appear that Foxbridgc has such a decided lead that he Avill not be deposed. A RECOVERY The I-lawke's Bay OAvned Travancore, Avho Avas raced at the. Auckland summer meeting Avlien a member of R. S. Bagby's team, but had later to be allotted an extended spell on account of soreness, has made a good recoA'ery from the ail-* ment and is. expected to make up for lost time in due course. RE-COMMISSIONED The Hawke's Bay steeplechaser, Dozie Boy, the last of the Lucullus family to race, is in full Avork at Hastings, and is expected to be on hand, to take his part in the Great Northern Steeplechase contest. DIVISION RACES lit is expected that at its annual meeting in July the N.Z. Racing Conference jjiay have to deal Avith the question of race di\'isions. Such arc by no means popular Avith the vacing public, and some of the Metropolitan Clubs ha\*e endeaA'oured to take steps to obviate the neces-j citj of prolonging the daA 7 's programme. The Wellington RacingClub has instituted a system of balloting out horses in order to bring the fields down to the safety limit, <vhilc the Auckland Racing Club has for its autumn meeting increased the Nelson Handicap to a mile jind a quarter and confined the Eden Handicap to three, four and ive year olds. Many country clubs ore awaiting the action, if anv, of the conference.
