OBITUARY

MR C. R. GOOCH

The death of Mr C. R. Gooch, a well known and widely respected businessman of Taneatua, which oc-i eurred last Monday week, came as something of a" shock to the community which knew him as a public man of keenness and. vigour. Born in London he came to Australia as a young man and setitlied an Sydney where he entered the wholesale tea business. After two years in this capacity he secured the man--agership of Messrs. Colebrooks wholesale tea warehouse in Auckland, where, lie remained for some years and married. He occupied a similar position in Dunedin for a brief time. In 1922, lie purchased a retail business in Taneatua where his efficiency and uprightness quickly won him many friends, and where he immediately proceeded to take an active part in public and local affairs. Always a keen musician he was associated when in Australia with the Sydney Eistedfod, with the Choral Society in Dunedin and the Municipal Choir in Auckland (under the late Mr Maughan Barnett). He was also choir-mastpr at St. Luke's Church, Remuera, for some 18 months. Whilst in Taneatua he took a very prominent, part,, in the affairs of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. His training of the choir was particularly appreciated. As secretary of the Taneatua Domain Board he served a long and faithful term, and at the outbreak of the war was one. of the first to offer his services in connection "tfith patriotic affairs. One of his selfimposed tasks was; the compilation of a register of all men who joined the forces from the district and went, overseas. Up till the time of his death this was kept religiously up-ito-date. He was also a keen bowler. Taneatua has lost a particularly valuable and venerated citizen in Mr Goocli who will be long remembered by all who knew him. A special service was conducted by the Rev. Steele prior- to the removal to the Crematorium Auckland. The pall bearers were. Messrs C. H. McCready, Thos Davis, K. Old, V. Mead, W. Richardson and G. Yeoman. j
