Local and General
Backwash Writing the Whakatane County Council regarding the alleged speeding of vehicles using the Whakatane traffic bridge the. IWV.'D. stated that it was unaware of a practical .method of stopping the speeding unless a man was stationed on the brklge night and day, which is out of the question. The Department stated that the only other complaint received in regard to speeding was about the Council's metal contract trucks. Ruatoki Sports * The special Maori Sports mectiT»g at Ruatoki on Easter Monday attracted a large attendance in spite of the important counter attraction in the shape of the gymkhana at Opotiki. The sports themselves were o credit to the Maori committee and resulted in a handsome contribution to the district's Patriotic quota. Ruatoki according to one visitor furnishes the finest example of a properly conducted and Maori-run sports gathering in Ncav Zealand. Our congratulations to those responsive for the organising on this account.
