THOSE who from this district were privileged to see the ceremonies at Rotorua last Wednesday when His Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, officiated at the opening of the Centennial Memorial Houses at Awahou and Ohinemutu, could not have but noticed the growing understanding and gradual breaking down of the barriers between the two races. Maori and Pakeha rubbed shoulders throughout the day's crowded programme and more symbolic still was the happy informal mingling of the leaders of both sections, a still stronger augury for a better and happier future.,
