Donation to' Rowing' Club's Fund 1 Though it was stressed by speakers, that it was not the. council's policy to make donations: to locajjj organisations in the ordinary course of events, the Whakatane County Council was unanimously agreeable last Tuesday in view of the unusual circumstances to vote the sum of £2 2s towards the Rowing Club Shed ! Renovation Fund. Whakatane—a Dead End It happened during the County Council discussion 011 the site of the proposed aerodrome at Te Teko. The question of bringing the site closer to Whakatane was under survey when Cr Hunter, who apparently has a strong mid-plains bias rose to his feet and from this commanding height of (sft 2in pouried scorn upon the suggestion of getting any closer to the town. "Why in 40 years, Whakatane might be a mere, suburb of Edgccumbe," he declared. 'What's the good of building it near a dead end like this. Now Edgecumbc is growing fast and, I think the nearer we get to Edgecumbe the better." Cr Hunter had a twinkle in his eye, but from the r.'i,iscd eyebrows around the table it was very evident that he was standing on risky soil. and Furlough A complaint that periods of leave for harvesting granted to men in the armed forces; were debited against their furlough was the subject of a recent, inquiry by the Provincial Secretary of the Auckland Farmers' Union (Mr A. E. Robin-! son). The reply from the Military authorities,, read at the monthly meeting on March 17, stated that, under present instructions, the right to furlough for any period lapsed on a man being granted leave without pay, 011 the recommendation of the Armed Forces Appeal Board or the Manpower BoardOn the man rejoining his unit he would be required to serve two months before a week's furlough would again become due. Any period of furlough due to him before" his temporary r.elease. would not be available on his return to his unit.
