ANNUAL REPORT

to ACTIVITIES FOR YEAR * Following is the secretary's (Mr: Matthews) annual report:— I have much pleasure in submit, ting the following report of th< inactivities of the l Whakatane W.I for the year ending February 31

* 1943. Eleven general meeting with an average attendance of 4.0 have been held, and 12 committee meetings. * Membership is 78 the same as las* year. We have now held a full year's programme of meetings in the Methodist Hall and it has proved to be a move for the better, being more convenient and making for better average attendances and brighter meetings. A new innovation, has been the First Aid talks which have been .most interesting and instructive and we are indebted to the,various members and visitors who have lee- i tured. | N The rest of the programme has, been as usual comprising 7 demon-! strations, and 5 talks with a roll call and 3 competitions at meeting. At the August meeting Mr Mairs of the Institute for the Blind gave ■ an address on. various aspects of their work and a 'bring and buy' of surprise packets was held as a result of which £5, including dona-, tions, was sent to the Institute for the Blind. The gardening circle, organised a flower show which was held in conjunction with our September meeting and proved a great success. * In October our 13th birthday was celebrated with a gathering of SO members and friends. Numerous beautiful articles, the work of the craft class were on display as was 5 also many papier mache articles jua.de by a group of members. The November meeting was again recognised as International Day and * a collection for the work in tlm Leper Colony realised £2 1/s. During February a very successful garden party for' special funds, wa.s held at Mrs Eggers residence and netted £9 13s. Whakatanc Women's Institute again held a place in the programme competition ticing for first ill ace with the Tahakopa -VV.I. When Mr Mairs of the Institute

for the Blind was agajn in Wliaka-» tane several members took it in turn to escort him during a canvass of the business lirms. At the 1942 bi-annual committee meeting our president Avas, elected to represent the E.B.P. Federation on the Dominion Representa.ive Council. Long sendee badges AA 7 ere presented to five members during the year: Fi\"e members staged a plnv at the B.D. meeting and also again at the bi-annual meeting. The various circles have done good work during the year and their convenors Avill later give individual reports. Patriotic. During 1942 the Institute tended and stocked the Red Cross shop three times realising £17 7s. lOd. Approximately 100 papier mache utensils were made for use in an emergency hospital, and 16 camouflage nets Averc made. The collection of members subscriptions to a total of £9 8s 8;'. l and the making and despatching of 15 soldiers parcels Avas undertaken by Mrs Sutclid'e. Various members made the. cake and shortbread for the parcels. Mesdames. Murphy and Henderson distributed 272 skeins of avool for the knitting of garments for the Forces and Merchant Navy and as a result 1() pullovers, 13 'scarves,, fi pairs bed socks;, 4 pairs socks, 4 3 Avaistcoats, 2 pairs gloA'es and 2 pairs mittens Avere knitted. Mrs Norman collected and despatched 2 parcels of linen for use in theNNeA r Zealand Base Hospital in Egypt. Forty-four pairs of cut-out pyjamas Avere obtained from the Red Cross and 25 pairs, have been returned finished. Over 1000 garments liaA'e been packed and forAvarded by Mrs Moran for the Lady Galway Guild. In adition to this six complete sets of clothing to fit. boys from (5-8 years haA r e been made for use in an emergency. ■ Since our la.sit annual meeting the Avorld situation, especially in respect to our own portion of it, has improved and we loqk forward to a successful yea'r and hope that Ave Avill hold our next annual meeting in times of- peace.
