WHAKATANE ANGLICANS

REV. J. C. J. WILSON

The induction of the Rev. J. G. J. Wilson as Anglican Minister of the Wliakatane Parish, took placa last Friday evening before a crowds ed congregation in St. George's Church, Domain Road. The ceremony was performed by Archdeacon Hodgson of Rotorua and was attended by visiting clergy from Tauran ga," Te Puke and Opotiki.

The new Minister who was prevf-r ously curate to the Napier Catl>. edral has had a wide missionary experience in Melenesia and. included in his- former field; of work the Solomon Islands where the present war with the Japanese is'being waged. ,

Following the service the Rev. and Mrs Wilson were the guests at a welcome social in the Parish Hall where representatives .of the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches: joined in extending their goodwill-

Speaking ol' ilve Rev. Cauliton who lias been vicar of the Whaka-r tane Parish ior so long, the Rev. HHogg (Presbyterian) said he did not think the local Anglican Church people realised what a splendid man they had had. He was sincere to a degree and had won raanv friendships welt beyond the bounds of his own congregation. He extended a warm welcome to the Wilson and trusted that he too would find many friends in the community. The 'Rev. G. V. Thomas spoke for the Methodist Church people. Mr B. S. Barry, Peoples Warden, extended the warmest welcome to the new Minister assuring him of. the sympathy and support of his congregation at. a time which alii agreed was made most difficult by war conditions.? Responding the Rev. Wilson meiv tioned that years ago when he. was performing voluntary work in the Solomons, he had met the Rev. Caul ton at Tulagi and had formed a deep regard, for him. He littlte; realised then that he would be following him in his New Zealand parish. He thanked particularly those ladies of the Guild who had thoughtfully prepared the vicarage for them prior to their arrival. The evening terminated with a light supper.
