BASIS OF GIVING

POSITION OF BRANCH INSTITUTIONS PROPORTION IpR LOCAL PATRIOTIC FUND "It has been, said," staid' Mr WSullivan at' the meeting of the Borough; Men's Patriotic Committee last Wednesday evening, "that many of the mercantile firms operating in this town, banks and stores, could do more to assist our patriotic effort. Even if they gave a percentage of their profits in keeping with their turnover, it would be more helpful to the smaller towns than by giving it all from headquarters in a llump sum, Mr Sullivan went on to point out • that the Farmers Trading Company ; had hit upon a good basis, of distri- i bution by allocating its donation to the patriotic fund, to each of. the centres in which its branch stores < were operating, pro rata to the. individual turnovers. Thus a certain sum was paid; into the local fund which was commensurate to the figure of the business done in the town. He thought that a very fair system and suggested that the Wha- 1 katane Committee might write to 1 the firms operating in this, town ; and as,k them to adopt a similar 1 method. He thought it a reasonable suggestion in view of the fact that these institutions were operating for profit in the town and should therefore be jirepared to' help the community in its war effort instead of diverting the whole of their donations to the larger centres.. It was pointed out by Mr McCallum that all civil servants, P. and T. workers, police officers, school teachers, and others, had their patriotic donations deducted from their wages at Wellington where the money was paid into, the central fund. This made a big section of people living in Whakatane ineligible for canvassing, and he thought therefore that some effort, should b& made to correct this anomaly as well. The meeting decided to act upon both suggestions and instructed the secretary to write to the managers of. local firms with headquarters in the. 'larger centres asking that an allocation be made; to the local fund and also to the various Government Deparaments relative to a diversion of a .similar proportion from the donations of Public Servants who had their living in this town.
