TOWN WHARF BERTHAGE SHIPPING COMPANY'S COMPLAINT Regretting to have again to call attention to the condition and 1 state of berthage accommodation at the Whakatane wharf, the manager of the Northern Steamship Company has written the Whakatane Harbour Board! seeking to alleviate the position. The letter which was received at last Friday's meeting of the Board stated that the 1 captain of the Clansman, on the 25th January reported that ithe berth was gradually getting worse and that the vessel was lying with a list of lour degrees. "If this goes on there is no question that the ship will very shortly commence to strain herself."' The: Board was asked to take steps: to have; the berth cleaned out so that, the 1 vessel can lay afloat at low water., The secretary reported that on the 21st January Mr Taylor of the Land Drainage Department had advised him itliat the department's half-ton grab was not heavy enough to undertake the board's berthage work. In an endeavour to< hire a grab letters had been directed to Captain Hammond, Northern Steamship Co.. the Harbour Boards at, Auckland. Wellington and Napier, Fletcher Construction Co., British Phosphate Commissioners, and Winstone Ltd., but so far the board had not been successful in being able to> hire a suitable grab and Captain Hammond had been advised of the action the board was taking. Mr Lucas added that. Mr Taylor of the Land Drainage Department had been communicated with and he had arranged an inspection in Auckland of Winstone's grab and the office had been advised by telegram on the 4th, February that such was not suitable. "Well/* said Mr W. R. Boon, the chairman, "we are doing our best and we can't do any more in the matter J" The board decided to advertise in the metropolitan papers for a suitablie grab.
