PREPARED TO ASSIST

ROWING CLUB'S SHED SCHEME

HARBOUR BOARD'S ATTITUDE

"Though offhand I am not prepared to say what should be done in that direction, I think that the Boardl should be preparedl to assist with the present movement to reconstruct the Rowing Club's shed and preserve it for the use of the boys now serving overseas,'" Said Mr W. R. Boon at the meeting of the Whiakatane Harbour Board on Friday. Mr Boon went on to say that he would like, to see the old shed pulled down altogether and a decent one built. But actually the Board required some set scheme before it could contribute. A representative citizens committee should be set up and the whole question of - reconstruction or renovation crystalised. He understood that something like £300 worth of boats were housed and as all the old club members were away at. the front it was up to the people of Whakatane to maintain the property. Mr Tielcner agreed wholeheartedly but said that there should be some application from those who were interesting themselves:. New Building Suggested The chairman: I would, personally like to sec a new building altogether. The old one: is an. eyesore and has been* for some time. I would be prepared to give them twice as much ito see a new building. Mr Tickner said that the matter could be given publicity in the press and. the committee informed that any application would be favourably considered. The meeting was informed that there the building had been inspected and the foundations were more less sound. lit was intended to call a meeting as: early as possible to estimate exactly how much was required and then to go to the public by Avay of subscription list. Held Over Mr Brabant asked why the Board could not. conatTuct the building and rent it to the club., The scheme might be linked with the 1 proposal for salt water baths which lie maintained were needed, for the; town. The matter was finally ileft for later representation from the citizens committee which has yet to be set up. and on jwhose behalf the 'Beacon' is now holding three separate donations given spontaneously when the. move to reconstruct the sliedi was first venfiliated.
