THE MISSING SHILLING
THE BEACON'S COMPETITION So much interest has been created by the competition for the missing' shilling, and we have had so many rings regarding the answer that we feel .we owe our readers a deep apology for having omitted; to publish the answer last weeik as promised. The competition was-:— A man saved £2 15s. He took £1 leaving £1 15. 0 took £1 leaving 15 0 took 9 0 leaving 6 ft took 6 0 leaving 0 £2 15 0 £2 1(3 0 Actually the second column lias no relation to the first whatsoever. You will find this out by deducting half-crown lots and adding up the stupendous second column which would then come to something approaching £30. The best way to illustrate it however is by tlie following parallel:—• A man had; an egg, a cake and a pea He took the cake leaving the cakra the pea lve took the cake leaving the pea he took the. pea leaving nothing When added up, one column gives the correct egg, cake and pea but the other shows one cake two peas, and no egg. Well ! !
