THE INFLUENCE OF LIGHT
THE remarkable difference in the appearance of the Strand at night, now that the 'blackout' has been practically lifted in its entirety, cannot but give rise to the widest comment and the widest satisfaction. It is surprising to note the extent of the general moral uplift which the restoration of the lights has been responsible for. "Just like old times again!" is the; average comment and with thoughts focussed on happier days the general public proceeds to prosecute its Friday evening's shopping.
Blight in Crops The oppressive heat experienced of late coupled Avith the muggy dampness has caused considerable Plight amongst the crops locally. The season which can only be described as an abnormally wet one has given rise to more d;is:eaKe amongst fruit and vegetables than has been the case for many years. Continual spraying avill counteract the spread of the blight but there are Tcav gardens in Wliakatane which have escaped unscathed.
Domain Road Gum Trees Asked at the meeting of. the Whakatane Borough Council whether or not it had been necessary to prune back the flowery gum trees in Domain Road Avhile the trees Ave re in blossom, the Elcctrical Engineer, Mr E. YV. Lysaght, .said that the foliage had been threatening the wires. In any case, he added that the roots would interfere with the underground cabling and he anticipated that in time the trees Avould have to be. removed.
