Military Appeals Appeals against military service by reservists drawn in the ballot on December 22 must be lodged by Monday, January 11, according to information from the National Service office. Usually the Tmal date is 10 days after the. Gazette notification, but the holiday period intervened on this occasion and extra days were granted for lodging appeals.

Grocer of the Future A prediction that the grocer oi the future will be vastly different from the grocer oi to-day is made in an editorial article, in the "New Zealand Grocers' Ileview/' which states: that it will have to be. recognised that the trade consists of something more than selling goods. A greater knowledge of the goods handled, and especially of their food values, will become essential. In the light of recent developments, the trade is likely to become a profession for which special training will be. required.

Jill of All Trades There are some interesting and unusual trades to be found in the British W.A.A.F. A list of them as seen in an official publication— there are 50 of them—would mystify the layman, for the R.A.F. has a passion for initial letters, and. by such letters are the various trades listed in official publication. "D.C.O" is a comparatively now trade. A "D.C.0." is a "dental clerk orderly " and, as such does the clerical work of the R.A.F. dentist. But, actually the "D.C.0." has advanced beyond the stage of bookkeeping or standing by while the dentist officer puts a patient through his paces. She is now able to undergo such a simple operation as scaling teeth. Metalling of Side Road Writing the County Council Mr J. S. Coward pointed out that the estimated cost of metal for 16 chains of roading to his side road was £105. Metal is to be 10ft wide and six inches deep. He asked if the council was prepared to accept four inches of metal as lie fe>lt his request was justified in view of the fact that thf roadway was a side road giving access to> only onei or lerties and was also a road i not carry any "through" traffic. The four inehes •would result in a saving iter of £35. After a short "i in which Cr Smith sup.ic. application the l council hat as the council's minify road metalling requires six inches, a departure s cannot, it is regretted, tied.
