Local and General

Held Over Meanwhile Writing the County Council last Tuesday the Rotorua County Council advised that the Rotorua County Council was now of the opinion that as the majority of the local bodies did not appear to favour the proposal to form a Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Rating Local Authorities Association, that the matter be deferred until after the war. The councillors felt that at the present time their duties on various local committees and also the restriction in travelling would ma'ke it very difficult for them to attend further meetings. The Council thereupon decided to hold the whole question in abeyance in the meanwhile. Plunket Appeal Day The Plunket Society's annual appeal day, which was observed, last Friday met with the record collection of £59 4s 9d. This sum was the outcome of the street canvass by lady collectors and the stall held in the Grand Theatre foyer. Competitions held in connection with the appeal resulted as under: Cake, Mrs J. Patterson; Pickles and Jams, Mrs Crozier; Dinner, Mrs Buttimore; Sponge, Mrs Rouse. Special thanks are due to those ladies who, though not members of the committee came forward and offered their services Mesdames Sam Armstrong, Pithy, Crozier, Bennett and Wallace, and Misses Helen Suckling and jNlarjorie Thatcher.

Rangitahi School Road Writing the Whakatane County Council relative to the Rangitahi School Road the District Engineer P.W.D. stated that the Department was not concerned about the closing of the excess width of the balance of the road. If the Council, or the Education Board wished to have this additional area closed, it would be necessary to proceed in the ordinary way by having land plan survey carried out and the necessary procedure either under the Land Act or the Public Works Act set in motion. If tlie Council has no objections to the closing of the whole road, then it would be presumed it would have no objection to the closing of the portion with which the Department was immediately concerned. Ihc Council resolved that the matter of road closing be referred to the Education- Department.
