At last Tuesday's meeting of the Whakatane County Council, the Chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, paid special tribute to the late Cr D. W. Spence, whose death occurred a fortnight ago. 'Though he was possibly the youngest member of the Council',' said Mr Burnett, 'he nevertheless took a keen interest in all county affairs, and being well above average in debate, I feel we will miss him very much.' One of his greatest endeavours was to establish the water supply for the people of. Edgecumbe, and I feel particularly pleased that he was spared to see this service actually inaugurated. He also was keen to start the Local Bodies Association in the Bay of Plenty, and his work in the E.P.S. on the Rarwgitai'ki has been directly responsible, for that organisation being the well-established service it is to-day." On his motion, the Council stood, in silence 1 to his memory and also recorded its sympathy with the late Cr Spencc's family and relatives.
