SCHOOL BOY LABOUR
WORK ON FARMS
DURING SUMMER HOLIDAYS In view of the prevailing acute shortage of farm labour, it is now planned to interest as many high school boys as possible in taking farm employ' ment during summer recess. The main difficulty in the past has been that, despite intensive publicity during October and November, farmers have failed to notify vacancies before the break lip for school holidays. The success of the scheme is thus plainly bound up with the farmer ma'king known his requirements before the end of the school term. To this end the Whakatane Primary Production Council is atfked to take steps to see, that the possibility of using school-boy labour is made known U> every farmer in its area. Many of these boys arc exceptionally lit young men round about 16-1S years of age. If any farmer is desirous of employing such labour it Avill be necessary for them to indicate; the nature of the assistance required, and the living accommodation offered; wages to be not less than award rates, under 17 £1 2s, under 18 £1 os<, under 19 £1 I<ks> plus keep. In view of the keen competition of city employers, perhaps a more attractive offer could be made. Applications should be sent to Secretary, Primary Production Council, Whakatane, not later than November 18; with their recommendations it then sent forward to the Government Youth Centre in Auckland.
