A WORD ON BOWLING
WHAKATANE CLUB'S OPENING
Beautiful weather marked the official opening of the Whakatane Bowling Club's greens on Saturday. Over 70 players were in attendance and there were also many Jadi.es present. The president, Mr W. S. Henderson, made brief reference to the ro-< cent death of Mr J.'W. Boon and the gathering stood, in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect-. Ho also extended a cordial welcome to all including visiting bowlers irom To Puke and Taneatua. His comments regarding' the excellent condition of the greens and. surroundings and Iris tribute to the green superintendent, Mr A. C. King, and also to Mr J. Healey, were warmly received. In jocular vein lie also offered, advice and encouragement to the many new players and modestly nominated the standard to be aimed at. "With the Avar clouds closer to our shores than ever before it has Jjeen argued/" stated Mr Henderson, "that gatherings of this description are not justified. Personally my opinion is that provided it does not in any manner interfere with our individual or collective war effort, we arc entitled to see'k the wholes some relaxation obtainable on the bowling greens." | With the rolling of the first bowl by Mrs Henderson the greens were declared open and an enjoyable afternoon's play followed. An excellent afternoon tea was provided, the dispensing arrangements being in the hands of. Mes, J dames Henderson, Burgess, King, McLeod, Crceke, Smith. Q'Rourke, Bell, Healey and Mc-> Isaac 26 v Lawn, Donaldson, Tippett and Howat 10. Warren,, Salmon, King 18 v Scliofield, Irvine and Foster 18. Bigelow, Whittaker, Hellyar and Littlejohn 16 v Gee, Pinker, Marsden and Manning 16. Giles, King, Bell and Caisley 23 v Topp, Head, Hollis and Marsh 20. Wilson McKenzie, Currah and Moody 22 v Cottrell, Butler, Pearson and Baxter 16. Smith, Buckman, Bath and Loano 26 v Gracc, Taylor, Drube and Chester 23. Harvey, Comer and Luxton 27 v Sliaple3% Canning and Spratt 22. Smith Stars In the first game for the Smith Stars Henderson, McLeod, Hollis and Hayward, (holders) , beat Bennett, McKenzie Dixon, and Drube 20-12. Entries arc now invited for the Handicap Singles and the Handicap Pairs.
