OTAKIRI DANCE

ASSISTING PATRIOTIC QUOTA

NUMEROUS NOVELTIES

All roads led. to Otakiri Hail on the evening of October 6 when a special dance, organised by the Entertainment. Committee of the local Patriotic Branch, was held. The hall was packed with visitors from far antl near, testifying to the popularity of Otakiri entertainments. Mr Lord, as M.C., "was largely responsible for the success of the evening. Specials of all kinds were introduced and the dancers, showed their appreciation and co-operation by their readiness to purchase tickets. Special mention should be given the Monte Carlo. For this dance, the response was outstanding and Patriotic Funds benefit accordingly. For this dance, the prize of 3 0/6 was won by Mr King and partner. During the evening another Monte Carlo was won by Miss N. Jacobs and Mr R. Byrnes. Eighteen couples entered for the Waltzing Competition Mrs Marks and Mr Perkins being awarded the first place. Judges were: Mesdames Butler, Mexted and Armstrong and Mr White. General curiosity was aroused about the "London Blitz" dance, but fortunatelj- the ''enemy'" d;id not come over till after supper, when the revellers, having fared very well under the capable management of Mesdames Tickner. Lord, Cristall and helpers were ready lo face the worst. At the first sign of the. "'enemy" a complete blackout was enforced and tha irks to the excellent music provided by the Gaiety Boys orchestra, the ''morale" of the people in the air-raid shelter was excellent, and in spite of collisions the dancers kept -going. No direct hits were recorded, although bombs were heard to explode close by. and machiae guns were in action. When the all-clear came, the dancers carried on in tiie small hours, and all voted the evening a great success.. The lucky ticket No. 123 was won by Mrs McNaugliton (Whakatane) the prize being a beautiful felt •shopping bag made and donated bv Mrs L. Cristall. j Mrs Hampton drew the iced cake, ! mad:- and donated by Airs King. I To the donors of the cash prize for the Waltzing Competition and other prizes mentioned above, the committee express grateful thanks.
