"WE MUST PAY TAXES"
THE OPINION IN AMERICA
REACTION OF THE PUBLIC
When the United States Treasury recently proposed to Congress that ineomc taxes be virtually doubled to .help pay for the war, the N'ep York Post sent its reporters out 011 the streets to ask passersby what they thought of it. Here were some typical responses: Said Frank Canovox, a milkman: "We must pay taxes to win the war.. I'd rather pay taxes Jthan pay tribute as a slave." John Petersen, exporter: "I'll pay good. Keep taxing. More taxes, more taxes. Tax, tax and kill the Japs." Mrs Mae Maxwell, housewife: "I have a son in the Navy now. Let"s win the war at any cost. If we lose we lose everything." John Petersen, exporter: "I'll pay as T earn it. A man in the cxporlt business should be more than eager to pay a tax to- beat. Hitler.:" 1 Said Nicholas Sima'k, a porter: "We're lighting for freedom, aren't we? We've got to get the money somehow to set Japan's sun.";
