SAND DANGER AT OHOPE

MOST experienced Whakataneans, have developed the habit of regarding the plight of unfortunate visiting motorists who are periodically trapped by the soft sand at the Ohiwa end of Ohope Beach, in the light of a joke. It is certainly not the case with the victim and we feel it is high time that something was done either by the Chamber of Commerce,, the County Council or the Ohope Domain Board (or all, jointly) to erect a conspicuous sign board at the entrance road warning visitors of the danger. Such an experience befell a group, of visitors last week-end. The tide being out they essayed the seven mile run along the harder sand and on arrival at the spit decided to round the point. The car became deeply embeddied and but for the lhree>mile sprint of a lady passenger for assitance must have become a total loss. The danger is trebled in. these days when motorists are few and holiday makers fewer and it is quite possible for a car to become a complete loss ber fore help could be directed: to the isolated spot. A suitable notice we feel, is the least which the local authorities could do to safeguard the interests of visitors.
