BOBBY CALF FIGURES MAINTAINED

AS has been mentioned before in these columns the Bobby Calf trade can be taken broadly as an indication of the rise or decline of the dairying industry in- any one area. To date it would appear, despite many assertions to the contrary that the industry has weathered all its setbacks mainly the outcome of labour and equipment shortages and remains very much the same in the Rangitaiki as in other years. The bobby calf barometer shows that collections to the end of September totalled this year 14,513,, against 14,588 for a similar period last year. Thus the difference is merely 72, and even this can be explained away in some measure by reason of the: decline in transport owing to the coal strike. There were as a result of this dispute only six trucking days as against eight last year for the current month. Incidentally September collections were but 3586 which was 385 less than the number collected in the same month 1941. It is considered possible however that the restoration of normal trucking days will soon overtake this figure and make up the deficiency thereby making it possible for the season to come; out at a similar level as last year's.
