THE CLOTHES-LINE THIEF
THAT there lives and breathes in Whakatane a certain type /of individual whose lack of decency and conscience permits him or her to enter, in the absence of their owners other peoples backyards and steal from the clotheslines articles of clothing and; household linen, is borne out unfortunately by the number of eases which have been reported recently. This dispicabl-e type of theft has been given fresh, impetus since the. introduction of the cupon system and the victim is often as a result, quite unable to replace the articles taken. The sneak-thief tactics employed are instanced by one such individual who after apparently watching the: bouse removed the clothes within the bare half hour that the householder remained indoors. That the thefts are not the work of* children can be borne out by some of the tactics employed,, and perhaps Whakatane would be surprised at the real culprits. In any case all are asked to co-operate in the matter of discovering their identity and in the meantime the warning is given to housewives to exercise the greatest care.
