N.Z. CITRUS FRUIT
PRICES EXTORTIONATE
Reference to the great disparity in the prices of oranges and citrus fruits in Australia and New Zealand is made in a re ; ccnt article in the Evening Post. Sydney Avholesale prices for oranges, June 18, were 7s to 13s a bushel case; mandarines 10s to 14s and, 16s to 24,s a bushel; lemons 7s to 12s a bushel, with 14s for "coloured" lemons. New Zealand wholesale control prices for Australian oranges ranged from £1 5s a case for 96 to a case to £1 16s for 300 to the case. Australian lemons are selling wholesale in New Zealand to-day at £1 18s 6d a case of 176 liemons to £2 13s 6d. for 392 lemons, a very small-sized fruit. The highest Sydney market, price for lemons was 14s a bushel case; the highest New Zealand control prices for lemons was £2 13s 6d for a case containing a bushel and one-third. The former "poorman" orange, a New Zealand fruit with a flavour all its own, is now dignified and sold as "New Zealand grapefruit." It was displayed in shops at prices ranging from 3d (small) to 6d each. New Shipment Between 10,000 and 11,000 cases of Cook Island oranges have arrived, at Auckland and arc being distributedthroughout the city and province. Supplies are getting low in most shops and the replenishment will be widely welcomed. There is no change in the prices, which have been fixed by the Internal Marketing Department at 19/6 to 24/6 a case wholesale, according to count. The highest retail price, therefore, will be 2/8 a dozen and the lowest 1/8.
