TYRE RATIONING
CYCLE AND MOTOR TYRES
LIST OF PRIORITY
A tyre and tube rationing scheme for pedal bicycles has been decided upon, the objects being to provide lor the most equitable, distribution of the limited supplies that are, or are likely to be, available. In anj nouncing the scheme the Minister ! :>f Supply and Munitions (Mr Sullivan) said that only necessitous ami essential purposes would govern the ability to purchase. The necessary forms which the applicant is required to complete arc obtainable at any cycle dealer. In addition to the applicant's signature, his teacher or in the case of an employee his employer is required to sign the application form in addition to a Avitness. The signature of a police officer was originally necessary, but this is not now required . Motor Tyres The procedure adopted for the obtaining of motor tyres is somewhat similar, although it is necessary for the applicant to lie 011 the priority list, which includes tyres for cars operated by essential Government services, doctors, visiting nurses or veterinary surgeons and clergymen. Also vehicles used exclusively as ambulances or hearses, for police, fire brigades, public health and' sanitary
services, mail services, or for tlie construction, manufacture and maintenance of defence-facilities -where no other means of transport are reasonably available, and for public road, passenger services (including school buses and taxis, but excluding rental cars and tourist and sight seefeg services) where otker means of transport arc not reasonably aA'snilablc. The priorMy list also cmbraces the following commercial vehicles used exclusively for the undermentioned purposes—Cartage of wood and co'al, consiruGtion @r main-, tenance of public r©a«ks, cartage of material arad equipment for the instruction and maintenan.©# of public utilities or essentia* proctusfcum facilities, »ar.talge wisentfel to reader roa-fing, plumbing, heating and> Irical repair service**, cartage toy licensed public carriers on a l'u4l$ r rationalised bos is, cartage by farmers of materia} and equipment essential for farming between the farm and nearest railway station or source of supply, transport of raw. materials and finished articles, although the .priority list does not include- tyres to be used on a truck lor house-to-house delivery except milk, tyres for farm tractors or other farm implements other than cars for the operation of which tyre casings or tubes are neccssarv, for industrial, mining and construction equipment other than cars or trucks for the operation of which rubbed tyres, casings or tubes are essential.
Advisory Committee
The old tvrc is brought by the applicant to any authorised reseller where' the tyre is inspected. If in the opinion of the retailer the tyre can be retreaded or recapped a report is made out and sent to the Chief Postmaster at Thames who issues the necessary authority for the procuring of the tyre. If, however, the dealer considers that the tyre is not retreadable the report goes forward to Thames and the permit for a new tyre is issued on the same lines.
