UNUSUAL FISH Sir, —While fishing about 12 chains off the Matata beach last Monday I hooked six peculiar fish which I' had a task to identitfy as I' had never seen any like them before. Some of the old fishermen of GO years residing at Matata had also never seen anything like them, so I made eurt quiries further afield and was told just to-<day by an old North Sea fisherman that they were cajieai 'Hake,' and one of the best "fisli to eat. The fish is like a cross between a trout and blue' cod, and the average weight was about 61bs each. I would like you to broadcast this in your Beacon and some one may be able to enlighten us as to thes habits of this 'Hake.' If. you want any further information I will be pleased to satisfy your request. Yours etc., ROBERT SCHICK.

FEWER BOBBY CALVES 4. Sir, —I was interested to note from your sub-leader in last Mondal's issue the decline in bobby calf collection in this district. You say that August will tell the true tale of whether the dairying industry in this district is slipping or not. I can safely assure that it is. You have only to look around, or take the farmers within your own limited circle to realise just how helpless they are to cope with the burden of maintaining their herds without additional labour. You will l find Mr Editor, that August's figures will bear out my contentions that dairying in this district has definitely gone back and will take a lot of building up. Yours etc.. 'ATLAS.*
