P.W.D. RATES OF PAY

THE release of the P.W.D, revised rates of pay following the recent extension of hours is likely to have some further disconcerting effects upon the wage earners in the civilian ranks. When it is possible for surfacemen to earn wages which have hitherto been more, or less regarded as the equivalent of managerial salaries there is bound to be repercussions. This subject brings forcibly to our mind the recent controversy figuring in these columns which compared the rate of pay to the soldier who trains to. fight for this country of ours, with that received by carpenter tradesmen working in the construction of their camps. We can only venture the query—how long can this ridiculous state of affairs obtain and how much higher will it go before breaking point.
