Local and General
Reduced to Rationing Said one businessman to a 'Beacon' representative yesterday: "I find) it so difficult to obtain stocks for my shop that I reckon in the near future I will have to ration them out at so much per month." Taking Shape Members of the Medical Corps of the Whakatane Home Guard, have been putting in much of their spare time on the ambulance trailer which they are now constructing. Upon a recent evening an energetic working bee gathered round the two-wheel ed structure in a local garage. The flooring and sides are now taking steady shape, the iron bracing all being made on the premises. The result should be a substantial vehicle capable of standing up to all the hard travelling which may be required of it.
School To-morrow The new term starts tomorrow. In sp&V of the difficulties of travel it { i| to learn the number: local residents who were able to s'&iklj their children away or give them 'a change by the sea. The new term seems to. have ushered in the genuine winter weather and we will soon, be conversant with the sight of toddlers in gum boots and macintoshes again. Another Victory Potato Following the publication of the discovery of a 'V' for Victory potato of am Opotiki grower, a Whakatane resident has brought another of a similar shape (but better of course) which was grown locally. The potato is a perfect 'V' and to add to the general patriotic effcct is crowned at each point with small sprouts. It will be held in the Beacon office for any person curious enough tc make an examination.
