FIREMEN AND SERVICE
SHORTAGE CREATES ALARM
APPEALS TO BE LODGED IN 1 FUTURE The growing shortage of experienced firemen as a result of war service was the topic of some concern at the meeting of the Whakatane Fire Board last Tuesday, when it was pointed out that the depletion of trained personnel of brigadesmen and auxiliary firemen made for an increasingly serious problem. The control of fires in the ordinary course of events was likely to be interfered with as well as those fires which might be started by enemy action. The Beard decided that in future, irrespective of the wishes of the individual fireman, appeals would be instituted against military service for all trained men.
Tt was also decided to recommend the K.P.S. to lodge similar appeals in most cases of Auxiliary Firemen of not less than 12 months service and who had attended not less than two-thirds cf the practice parades.
