CULL BULLS
are they used for canning ?
At the March meeting of the Auckland Farmers' Union Executive it Avas reported that some meat exporting firms Avere using meat from cull bulls in conjunction Avith cow beef in canning operations. It was decided to draw the attention of the Minister of Agriculture to the matter, and at the same time to request that farmers should be paid Tor cull bulls at the same rate as for cull cows, namely, 20/- per lOOlbs on hocks. In his reply, just received, Mr P>arclav states: —■
"I regret I am unable to agree to any payment for these animals, which arc not required for canning purposes to fulfill Government contracts. To the best ol' my knowledge bulls are not being canned for ex-
port."
Discussing the reply at last meeting several members reiterated the allegation that cull bulls were being, or had been, disposed of as canned meat, but agreed that the matter could not with advantage be pursued further.
