RECORD OF SERVICE

FIFTY YEARS A SCHOOL COMMITTEEMAN MR J. RUTHERFORD'S RECORD The resignation of Mr J. Rutherford as chairman of the Edgecumbe School Committee, brought to n close aagperiod of fifty years continuous service as a school commit teeman. The half century of service must constitute something of a record in this sphere of work and wo join in extending our wannest congratulations to Mr Rutherford on his interest and application. Mr Rutherford commenced taking' tin interest in school matters as n young man of twenty years when he was first elected to a committee. Realising the important part played by our educational institution? In moulding and strengthening the character of the child, he maintained that it Avas the the duty of all parents to take an activc and intelligent interest in the functioning of the school and in the contacting of the teaching staff. To that end Mr Rutherford has always taken a leading part in education matters wherever he has lived, offering his services and experience willingly and without reserve in order that the children should receive the best he eoukl give.

It -would be interesting to know if the Education Board lias any record which tallies with the long period of service put up by Mr Rutherford.
