WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
WHAKATANE MEETING
The April meeting of the Whakatane Women's Institute was held recently. There was a fair attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of the Institute song, following which the aspirations were read by Mrs McKenzie. Minutes of the March meeting were read and approved. Regrading articles knitted for members of the fighting forces, the president requested members to bring and place upon exhibition all completed articles before despatch.
An invitation to their, birthday meeting was received from the Otakiri Institute. Air Force blue and khaki wool from the Red Cross was distributed among members willing to kmt. The majority of members considering the Methodist Hall to be more central than the present place of meeting, it was decided that future Institute meetings should be held there. With a view to arranging hospital visits, members were requested to report any cases of lickness amongst the Institute to Mrs Miller. Last year's : arrangement re soldiers' parcel, whereby each member contributed 2/6 towards the contents of the parcels, is to be adhered to this year. The gardening circle will be- held on the' 3rd Tuesday of each month, and the crafts class on the 3rd Thursday,. Members willing to assist in the making of splints for E.P.S. passed their names to the secretary. The occasion being Members' Day, at this stage the meeting was taken over by the members, Mrs Cairns presiding. Two clever recitations by Mrs Hepburn of Awakeri, were received with hearty applause, while two songs by Mrs. Carter "Bless This House" and "Smiling Thru" were rendered in a very pleasing manner. Shoulder Sprays were presented to both ladies by the president. Mrs Prideaux then gave a most interesting and instructive talk dealing with artificial respiration in which varying methods suited to different ages Avere dealt with. Mrs Prideaux was also the recipient of a shoulder spray. A competition for Ihe tidiest handbag was won by Mrs Moran, whose bag contained only two items. Competition for the best (tower was Avon by Mrs Wheeler Avhile the winner of the competition for the best sponge Avas Mrs Lysaght. The best Ijoavl of autumn (inls was brought by Mrs Matthews. Avith Mrs Stewart gaining second place. Afternoon tea brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close.
