CONSTRUCTION OF ABATTOIR DEFENCE WORK MORE IMPORTANT The decision of the Whakatane Borough Council to erect a municipal abattoir has met with a temporary setback owing to the Government's restrictions which are designed to give precedence to. all Avorks of defence and army construction. The Building Controller replying to the Council's application for a permit suggested that a re-applica-tion should lie made in six months time. The Mayor in commenting upon the position said that in A'ieAV of the turn of events since the application was made the chances of proceeding" were now out of the question.: Rainfall Figures In Whakatane last night .40 points of rain fell making a total of .59 inches for the month and 3.75 inches for the year to date. Star and Crescent The emblem of Turkey—the star and crescent moon—Avere to be seen in close proximity by early risers on Sunday morning. The bright morning star, Venus ay as. just outside the hours of the rising moon a|t 4 a.m. Both kept rising until daylight blotted them out. On Monday morning the star had "a lead of about 20 lengths" (to use. a sporting term) on the Availing moon, Avhich evidently found the pace too hot in this astronomical gallop.
