ALL-IN EFFORT

THE PUKEKOHE PLAN

BOROUGH COUNCIL'S RECEPTION

LETTER MERELY RECEIVED

The plan propounded by the Pukekohe Borough Council for an all-in war effort, whereby civilians throughout the Dominion would receive only military rates of pay and all surplus monies would be devoted to the prosecution of the work of defence and manufacture of New Zealand made munitions was before the Borough Council last Monday evening.

The Avhole scheme Avith its revolutionary suggestions and far-reaching repercussions Avas read by His Worship the Mayor who asked for a general expression of opinion. Cr S hap ley declared that it Avas too far-reaching to be considered at one meeting. Cr Armstrong; 'It has a lot of good points." Cr Shapley: "This is not the time to think of such a sweeping change over. Wo cannot start changing horses in midstream." Cr Canning: "Its the Government's duty to clean this up!" Cr Creeke: ".And they Avon't do it without pushing." The Mayor said that it AA*as olrv")ous that the whole scheme had been given careful and deep thought. Whether it Avas practicable in its application Avas another thing. He did not think from Avhat he liajl read in the press that it had been very well receiA r ed in other centres. i

Cr Sullivan pointed out that the Governmeait had its military advisors who were watching the position closely. He did not think that any suggestions from local bodies would be of any avail. Personally lie did not think the council competent to sponsor such a scheme. Doubtless any letters would receive consideration and sympathetic reception but that was as far as they would get. On the motion of Cr Good the letter was received.
