LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

MEETING IN WHAKATANE The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in Knox Hall on Tuesday last* There was a good attendance of members and friends. The president, Mrs W. Sullivan, opened the meeting by reading the Objects and Rules of the League, followed by the member's prayer and prayers for peace. The thought for the month was given by Mrs Palms, of Thornton, 'The soft smile of a loving face is better than the splendour that fadeth quickly.' The correspondence was then dealt with, and after some discussion it was decided that would form a greater part of the future meetings. The president announced that tho last effort for the Red Cross yielded £5 10s Sd. The next effort for the Red Cross would be on April 17. The president outlined the work undertaken by the Red Cross and Ladies' Patriotic Committee and many excellent garments made from discarded clothes by a committee under Mrs Mo ran for the Lady Galway Guild were exhibited by Mrs Buddie. Ladies were asked to bring their war Avork to the meetings.

A short talk on 'Prayer' was given by Mrs H. Hogg, who stressed the necessity of prayer in our national life, and pointing out the great bene* fit of both public and private prayer. The; address was greatly appreciated by all present. A demonstration of the l making ot eamouflougc nets was given by Mrs F. SutclifTe, who spoke of the urgent need of these for home' defence. Mrs Drube greatly pleased the audience with her two songs 'God Give Me Love,' and the 'Road to the Isles.' A vote of thanks to all taking pari was carried by acclamation, after which afternoon tea was dispensed by two members of the committee. The meeting closed with the National Anthem.
