COUNTY PLANT

INVESTIGATION AND CONTROL

SUB-COMMITTEE'S REPOR T

A report by a special sub-com-mittee set up for the purpose of investigating the position of the County plant, was laid before the Council meeting last week, when the Chairman (Mr J. L. Burnett) said that the committee had gone a little further than perhaps authorised, but had after careful and thorough investigation made certain propositions which would, he claimed put the whole procedure on a more satisfactory basis. "Your committee begs to report that it will be possible with the new workshop facilities to inaugurate a better workshop records system which will apply to the charging of time and materials to jobs; supply the necessary details in regard to the servicing of plant and particulars in regard to the charging out of "workshop" stock. The lack of such a system makes it impossible for your committee to report on whether maintenance costs of any of the plant units, including the trackson high shovel units, are excessive or otherwise." He said most of the recommendations dealt with tlie fixing of charge rates and the delegation of greater powers to the acting engineer than hitherto. Cr McCready was the greatest critic of the recommendations, claiming that the proposal to limit the storage of County tools only in the workshop, was unfair and uneconomic. What mechanic in the country did not utilise mcist of' his own gear, he asked. If this rule was strictly enforced it would have the effect of crippling the activities of the mechanic. I't was agreed to waive the suggestion, and to adopt the others as they stood. A vote of thanks to the investigating committee was carried unanimously.
