MANPOWER COMMITTEE SITS

WHAKATANE CASES HEARD

Reservists whose names appeared in the latest ballots appeared! before the District Manpower Committee, which sat in Whakatane last Thursday. The • committee consisted 1 of Messrs E. Edwards (chairman), E. J. Wi'lton and A. H. Blackmore. There was an obvious tightening up in the granting of adjournments ■ and though all evidence was carefully weigihed, the recent announcement by the Minister of National Service to the effect that all fit men should be sent to camp if possible, had no j doubt a bearing upon the decis- , ions arrived at. ) In the case of S. McT. Bell, E. A. ' Bell, farmer, the appellant submitted evidence i'or the retention of liis .services. The ease was adjourned J sine die. O. L. Davics (reservist and ap- < pellant) appealed for an extension ' of leave from camp. Granted release from camp not later than July 15. The case of F. J. Foubister, for < whom J. O. Foubister appealed was I adjourned till April 15. M. Jones' appeal was dismissed 1 for lack of prosecution. In tlie 1 case of C. N. Thatcher, < H. E. Thatcher appealed. It was « decided that the hearing will be recalled and that reservist will not be 1 required to enter camp before July 15; T. R. Henderson's appeal was dismissed for lack of prosecution. J. L. Parsons who appealed on his own account as an independent farmer was granted an adjournment ■sine die, conditional to his remaining in his present occupation and obtaining , a transfer to the Home Guard within 14 days. S. G. Kerr was granted release from camp till July 15. The appeal of J- L. Hayward was ■adjourned till April 15. Mr F. B. Maunder appealed on rbehalf of reservist B. E. t. Hughes, his sharemilker. The application was adjourned sine die', conditional to. the reservist remaining in his present occupation, and joining the [Home Guard within seven days. In H. Luke's case, A. L. Luke appealed, stressing the vital work ■ carried out by reservist as share.milker. A further sine die adjournment was ganted conditional to reservist remaining in his present occupation and joining the Home Guard. C. J. Lynden's appeal was with'drawn by consent, not to be called before April 10. The decision in the case of H. L. Skiffington, for whom F. P. Sltiffington appealed, was reserved for seven days. After hearing the evidence of reservist Y. J. Vitalli, the committee granted an adjournment till the • end of next month when the casie ■will be re-heard. Appealing on his own account A. J. Hopkirk was granted an adjournment was granted conditional to reremained in his present occupation and joined the Home Guard. W. J. Werts, appealed for reservist A. E. Fowler. The case was dismissed, the reservist not to be called before May Ist, and not io be required for camp before the end of July. S. C. Spence who. appealed on his own account, was granted a sine die adjournment, on condition lie remained in his present occupation and continued to serve as Deputy Controller of the Medical branch of the E.P.S. j Decision was reserved in the case j of W. D. McC. Steele, for whom Mr E. J. Bell appealed, and will be reviewed on April 10. H. E. Ashby agreed to withdraw his appeal by, consent. F. W. Foote also withdrew by consent. B. D. Kane, for whom Mirs F. K. Kane apiiealed was granted release from camp till July 15. J. P. Kane (same appellant) was granted a sine die adjournment, provided he remained in his present occupation and joined the Home Guard. Mr P. Fenton appealed for R. Moriarty, and the case was adjourned till July 31 conditional to reservist remaining in his present job and joining the Home Guard. A similar adjournment was granted P. H. Hansen. H. V. Paul who appealed personally was granted a sine die adjournment conditional to joining the Home Guard and retaining his present occupation. T. Cairns, for which a reserved decision was recorded. A sine die decision was entered in the case of H. M. Dewar, on condition that he retained his present business and continued to serve in the Home Guard Medical Corps. Appellant indicated his willingness to serve in the army in his capacity; as chemist. A further condition was added that if wanted reservist would be prepared to enter the army in his professional capacity* N. J. Larsen's appeal was dismissed, to. be called 15/5/42. E. R. Hunt's appeal was also dismissed not to be called before April 15. Conditional to his remaining in his present occupation and serving in the Home Guard, H. E. Young's appeal was adjourned sine die. S. K. Schofiekl's appeal was withdrawn by consent of the committee and a transfer made to 34tli Army Troop Coy. The case of H. W. Sharpe was withdrawn to be called at the end of April. ' S. G. Bishop was given a reserved decision. The committee found that it could take no action in the case of K. A. Raymond, for whom his mother appealed. Reservist was already in camp. Extension of leave till the end of May was granted R. E. Rartley, when the case will be heard with that of another employee.
