TRENCHES AT SCHOOL GROUNDS
Sir, —With reference to the continued refusal of the Minister of Education and the Board to allow slit trenches to be dug in the school grounds, I would say to the parents, "go ahead and dig the trenches, they are your children who are to be protected." Hamilton is considered, safe as a reception area for evacuees, yet trenches are dug in the school grounds there. Parents may ask whether enough A.A. guns have been provided, in Whakatane to keep any raider at such a height that machine-gunning of civilians would be impossible ? Also, does Japan know that the Government consider Whakatane such a safe area that neither slittrenches nor evacuation plans arc required? Is Japan likely to accept the Government's ruling ? Cast off that "it can't happen here" complex, and get out that shovel. Yours etc., JANET K WIN'S TONE.
