THE HOME GUARD

Sir, —I was very pleased to see Mr Andrew McLean and "Unity's" replies to the letter of Messrs Gow and Wilson. Perhaps it would be possible to go into the matter of the 40-hour week a little more fully. I take it that what Messrs Gow and Wilson desire to y see is workers working more than 40 hours a week ora ordinary rates of pay. Now obvious- . ly this means more profit to employer; more than he is> when he is paying time and a half and double time; for he would not be able to pay these unless he were still making a profit. Personally. I would prefer to see the worker get the extra so that he can afford the • necessities of life for himself and his family, rather than see the em- • ployer increasing his income to enable him to buy luxuries. Instead of attacking the 40-hour week let cur Home Guaril leaders rally the people to compel the Government to make the fullest use of our workshops and garages for the making of light arms. Let the Home Guard be given intensified training with pay, so that lives may not be thrown away through men being badly trained. And last but not by no means least let us have the children (and women not engaged in essential industry) evacuated' from the danger areas into the country. Yours etc., ONE OF THE! RANK AND FILE.
